My Nokia 3650 has given up the ghost...Need a new phone
I have been looking at the SDA and also the MDA
I have t-mobile with unlimited t-zones (GPRS) for $4.99 option package. This has allowed me to check my e-mail and also some WAP surfing to check baseball scores, stock prices etc.
I also have installed Netfront which allows me to view real web pages (Non WAP).
Can I use the SDA to do the same thing without having to buy into a pricey data package? I do not want to spend $30 a month to read CNN and get baseball scores.
I never SMS or text message but I would like to see real web pages and check my mail.
My second question is in regards to WiFi connectivity. T-mobile says I have to have their $29.99 data package to use WiFi at all. I have a wireless network at home and would like to surf from the couch using my Wireless router as an access point. Can the SDA do this without accessing T-Mobile's network?
The same questions go for the MDA if anyone can share some knowledge on that phone.
Thanks, Guy

I am your hero...I just got off the phone with T Mobile tech support level 3
For you to get Internet access on the SDA, you MUST subscribe to their 29.99 a month plan.
T Zones (5.99 a month) will not work on the SDA..period
Wi-Fi at home works perfectly. Set connections up as "the internet" and not WAP or secure WAP and you will have zero issues. My neighbors have a unsecure network and I can connect to it with no problems at all.
MDA and SDA are the same phone except the MDA has a built in keyboard (I almost wish I got that one)

The Data package is a rip off. Almost every square mile of business and residential areas in cities and big towns have some kind of wi-fi available for free. Hell even McDonalds & Subways have it now for free. I'll make a list of businesses soon that have wi-fi on this board.
If you only desire to use it on ocassion when traveling then just use the Wi-Fi connection. It detects what connections are available, tells if its password protected or unsecure and once you connect it says your signal strength.
I bought a small Iogear Wi-Fi hot spot finder to find signal so I don't have to turn wi-fi on my phone to search it costs about $20.

Strange, I googled "MDA+$4.99 t zones" and found pages and pages of people using $4.99 t zones to access real web pages through Pocket Internet Explorer using both SDA and MDA. I think T Mo tech support just tell their customers this to get them to pay $29.99. I walked out of T Mo store disappointed cause I couldn't use PIE on an MDA to surf web with Unlimited $4.99 t zones. Now I'm thinking about going back and purchasing either an SDA or MDA again. I'm telling you, trust me. T-Mobile changed it's policy or something. I have been trying and trying to get to the Internet with TZones and wifi off, no go..turn wifi back on, grab some unsecure network and internet is back. I was at level 3 support, not the customer service people who want to sell you packages.
It can't be done. Even TZones can not be done without the Internet package.
I would love to see one of the links you were looking at to see what hacks or what they are using to accomplish this feat.

So who's right...can the SDA connect to any wifi hotspot and you can browse the web or will it not work at all without the Data package? If I'm at a mall and it has free wireless, will the SDA let me browse the internet WITHOUT the data pacakge or does it block it somehow without data subscription?

I do NOT have the data package and can get on the web all day long. I use my corporate wireless network at work, my neighbors unsecure network at home and various unsecure hotspots inbetween.
You do NOT need anything from Tmobile to get internet access.
I can get to TZones using wifi alos fyi, its just another webpage, not like before where you had to have TZones package to get to it (that's the way it was on my sony erricson)

I'm only going to say this one more time people. The T-Mobile SDA has FULL WI-FI CAPABILITY. What that means is that if there is an unsecure wi-fi connection available you turn wi-fi on, choose the connection, and as long as you have enough signal then you'll be able to surf the internet for free just like any laptop would. If the connection is secure with WEP or some password protection your shit out of luck unless you can get the password. I've surfed the net on my phone at over a dozen placess.

Thanks for clearing that up for a dense guy like me! So out of curiosity, what the heck does the data package do for you then? Is tmobile just hoping people don't realize this and pay the 30 bucks to get wifi or does it still give you some features you wouldn't have otherwise?

Yes, TMobile hopes you don't realise just how simple it is to get Internet access, but then again, if you don't have access somewhere the data package would allow you to have connectivity (say on top of Mt Washington or something)
